The quick check
iPhone: iPhone XR/XS and newer support eSIM. Open Settings → Cellular; if you see 'Add eSIM' or 'Add Data Plan', you are set.
Android: Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and most recent devices from Google, Samsung, Motorola and Oppo. Check Settings → Connections → SIM manager.
Watch out for carrier locks
Devices bought on a carrier contract (especially in the US, Canada and Japan) can be carrier locked, which blocks eSIMs from other providers. Ask your carrier to unlock it.
Regional exceptions
Some Chinese and Hong Kong iPhone models have no eSIM support or use two physical SIM trays instead. Check the model number if your phone was bought outside Europe.
